Makalu Base Camp Arun valley Trekking
Fascinating and challenging trek to the base camp of Makalu (8462m), situated in the Makalu Barun National Park. Makalu – world’s fifth highest mountain - towers on the nothern boundary, straddling the borders of Nepal and Tibet.
The Makalu Base Camp trek in the eastern part of Nepal is a trek of unsurpassed beauty, towering Himalayan peaks, biological diversity and cultural heritage. The Makalu trek starts from Tumlingtar and follows the beautiful Arun River into the Makalu Barun National Park. The panoramas from Shipton pass and from above Makalu Base Camp are magnificent, especially at sunrise and sunset the scene is even more sublime.
Due to its isolation and remoteness the Makalu trek still is a true adventure, even for experienced trekkers.
Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive inKathmandu
Welcomed and Pick up by us and transfer to hotel. We will explain the daily program upon arrival. Overnight at hotel .
Day 02: Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing
Sightseeing of World Heritage Sites like Kathmandu Darbar Square, Swayambhunath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Pasupatinath Temple. Overnight at hotel .
Day 03. Kathmandu–Khandbari
After flying to Tumlingtar we walk north to Khandbari. The trail crosses a plateau (45 minutes) then climbs gradually for about 3 hours. We camp above the village on large grassy fields. Overnight at camp.
Day 04. Khandbari–Chichira
We walk through many small picturesque villages, occasionally on steep trails for 3 hours to reach Goure. Chichira is 3 hours further, still uphill. Overnight at camp.
Day 05. Chichira–Num
The morning starts with wonderful views of Makalu and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The path, an ancient trading route, after a few up and downs, descends through forest to Num. Overnight at camp.
Day 06. Num–Navagoan
We descend steeply for 1. 1/2 hours to the suspension bridge across the Arun river. It is a 2 hour ascent to Kerabari. We then continue upwards for 2 more hours to Navagoan (Shidda) and the police check post. Overnight at camp.
Day 07. Navagoan – Tashigoan
Ascending through forest we pass the picturesque Sherpa village of Tashigoan, the last village en route to the base camp. Overnight at camp.
Day 08. Tashigoan – Khonpma
We climb out of the forest to the grazing area of Khonpma, 5 1/2 hours away. We have a packed lunch because of the lack of the water in between Tashigoan and Khonpma. Overnight at camp.
Day 09. Khonpma – Mumbuk
Above Khonpma we occasionally walk on snow (depending on the season) to Changse Danda. Two hours further on is Magar Chanse Danda. Makalu and the surrounding Himalaya is spectacular. We camp just over the Barun Pass. Overnight at camp.
Day 10. Mumbuk – Nehekharka
Starting early we take about an hour to cross some land slides. 4 hours further on over the higher river plains is Nahekharka. Overnight at camp.
Day 11. Nehkharka–Mera
After crossing the wooden bridge over the Barun river we trek beside the river on grasslands to Mera . The mountain peaks here are inspiring. Overnight at camp.
Day 12. Mera–Makalu Base Camp
We pass a small glacier with spectacular alpine scenery before reaching the base camp.
Overnight at camp.
Day 13. Makalu Base Camp-Barun Pass
Trek return to Barun pass. Overnight at camp.
Day 14. Barun Pass-Khongma
Trek return to camp at Khongma. Overnight at camp.
Day 15. Khongma-Navagoan
Trek return to Navagoan. Overnight at camp.
Day 16. Navagoan-Num Village
Trek return to Num Village. Overnight at camp.
Day 17. Num Village-Bhote Bass
Trek return to Bhote bass. Overnight at camp.
Day 18. Bhote Bass-Tumlingtar
Trek return to Tumlingtar. Overnight at camp.
Day 19. Tumlingtar-Kathmandu
Fly to Kathmandu & transfer to hotel.. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 20. Departure
After breakfast departure transfer to Airport for onward destination.
